My Favorite Diaper Bag: The Ju-Ju-Be B.F.F. Convertible

When I became a mom, I quickly learned the importance of a great diaper bag. This is something I knew I would be carrying with me all the time and replacing my purse, so I wanted to find a good one. I went through two before finding the right one–I’ll share the details of all three today! Please note this post is not sponsored by anyone and is just my honest mommy opinion.
First try: Overland Equipment “Sierra” Bag
If you don’t know me, I like to live frugally and live below our means. I had an old Overland Equipment messenger bag lying around that had some pockets and I thought I would give it a shot and try to make it work. After a few weeks, it was clear that it wasn’t functioning well as a diaper bag. There weren’t enough compartments to keep it organized and it just didn’t have enough space for all the stuff I wanted to keep in the bag.
Second try: SkipHop Duo “Special Edition” Diaper Bag
After trying to make something work that I already had, I decided to buy a SkipHop Duo diaper bag. It looked promising with more pockets to stay organized. We were bottle feeding our daughter, so I thought the zipper side pocket bottle holder would be nice. We used Dr. Brown’s bottles and it was a stretch to get those suckers zipped up in that small side compartment.
After using it for several weeks, it just wasn’t working for me. I didn’t want to carry around a separate purse and diaper bag and there wasn’t enough space. I’m not usually a light packer. Also, the shape of the bag made it hard to stay organized. The bag is more vertical shaped than horizontal and I was constantly digging for things at the bottom. With bottle being stored in the secret compartment on the sides, it took up space “inside” the bag, which made it even more difficult to get things in and out. If you are a light packer, this bag might be okay for you, but I wasn’t happy with it.
While feeling frustrated with the SkipHop bag, some mama friends and their families came over to our place for a cookout. I couldn’t help but notice two of my friends had the same bag, so of course I had to see what the big deal was. One of the moms had twins and her third baby and was raving about it! The bag was the Ju-Ju-Be B.F.F. Convertible diaper bag.
I’ll be the first to admit, the price tag on this bag gave me sticker shock! I hadn’t even considered this bag before because I wasn’t looking to spend more than $50 on a diaper bag, and this one cost $179. However, after a few months of frustration and consideration, I decided it was a good investment. Afterall, I knew that I would be carrying this as long as M was in diapers and I would be using it for future kiddos as well. I am going on almost three years of using this bag daily and it has held up really well!
Some of my favorite features of this bag:
- The cute patterns that don’t scream “BABY!” (I chose the Queen of the Nile print and love it!)
- Can be worn as a backpack or messenger bag
- Front zippered “mommy pocket” that I keep my wallet and sunglasses in
- 2 Insulated pockets that stretch for bottles or water
- Main zipper closure opens the bag so that you aren’t digging for things from the top of the bag
- Wipeable unique material that is machine washable (wahoo!)
I’ve recommended this bag to all my new mommy friends. It has held up so well for as much as I use it–every day for nearly three years! If you’ve been looking for that perfect diaper bag, give this a shot. I love it!
In the spirit of honesty, I’ve had two minor issues with this bag: one of the main zipper pulls came off once and I accidentally scratched the side of our car with the metal on the bag(sorry hubs!). The zipper pull easily reattached with pliers and I’ve tried to be more mindful of not scratching the car getting M in and out of her carseat.
Stay tuned on the blog and I’ll share what I keep in my diaper bag! What’s your favorite diaper bag?
